Braided Hex Nut Bracelet - DIY

So I finally made this fun DIY from Honestly WTF and it turned out great!

Here are the basics:

You will need your cord and the hex nuts. I used 16 nuts, but you can use more or less depending on how you want it to look.

Cut 2 lengths of cord, one 80cm and the other 40cm. Double the longest one over giving yourself a loop at the top. Using the shorter one tie a knot about 5cm down from this.

Once secured you can start braiding the three strands (you can loop the end around something unmoving, this will give you more stability whilst you braid).

Start adding your hex nuts whenever you like, I did mine about 5cm down the braid. When you are about to take a strand from the side and cross it over, add a nut.

Keep going to your desired length, then finish of with some more braiding.

At the end of this braid tie it in a knot (do not cut off the end bits yet). Now you just need to finish it off to make it look neat.

Using thread and a needle, stitch the strong thread through the beginning of th braid and wrap it around until you have just enough of your loop left to go over the knot at the end.

At the knot end sew your thread around it making sure that it will not unravel.

Then trim the excess threads off the end and you are all done!

I also made one with some thinner cord and using brass washers and beads. I actually prefer this one!

Dyeing for Some Fun

Hello sweeties, I am still off work for the last few days *dances* so have been lazing around doing jobs that I have otherwise not done!

Hence this post :) I have put aside clothes that I thought needed a little pick-me-up.

Firstly was a little lacey dress my younger sis gave me. Originally a cream colour which doesn't work against my pasty skin ^_^

So I decided to dye it a lovely green.

Then there was my cream high waisted skirt I loved, until I got marks on it (and the fact it was slightly see-through haha). I have always wanted a red skirt, so in went the dye and out came my skirt!

The process is really simple. All you need it your item of clothing, fabric dye from a fabric store or some supermarkets and a giant bucket! Oh and salt to help the dye set.

As per instructions on my pack I dissolved 250g of salt in 6 litres of warm water in a large bucket. In another container I mixed the powder dye with 500ml of water, then added this to the bucket.

Take your item of clothing and wet it completely, wring it out and submerge it in the dye. Stir this for 15 mins, then stir occassionaly for the next 45 mins.

Once completed rinse your clothes in cold water until all or most of the dye has run out. Then put through the washing machine on warm water.

Ta Da!!

So don't throw out that cute dress that now seems a bit boring, just dye some new life back into it! Perfect for some bright summer colours.

Ciao Lovelies

ps. remember primary colours when you are dying clothing/material. If you have a yellow skirt and you dye it blue, it is going to go green :)

Chicken & Leek Pie

The fiance and I saw this recipe on TV over Christmas, a Jamie Oliver special which looked amazing, so we decided to try it out.

As we didn't have any leftover Turkey (as the recipe had) we replaced this with a bbq chicken. This recipe is so easy to follow yourself, and doesn't require much skill at all!

Ingredients
• 2 rashers bacon, roughly chopped
• ½ bunch of fresh thyme, leaves picked
• olive oil
• a large knob of butter
• 2kg leeks, washed, trimmed; white end chopped into chunks, green end finely sliced
• sea salt and freshly ground black pepper
• 800g cooked white turkey meat (replaced with chicken), torn into big chunks (brown too if you want)
• 2 heaped tablespoons plain flour, plus extra for dusting
• 1.2L turkey, chicken or vegetable stock, preferably organic
• 2 tablespoons of crème fraîche
• 1 x 500g packet puff pastry
• 1 egg, preferably free-range or organic, beaten

Optional - which I didn't use
• 12 jarred or vac-packed chestnuts, roasted and peeled
• 2 sprigs fresh sage, leaves picked

Method

Preheat your oven to 190°C/375°F. Put your bacon in a large pan on a medium heat and add your thyme leaves. Add a lug of olive oil and the butter and let it all fry off a few minutes.

Add all of your prepped leeks and fry them off for about 3 minutes so they are well-coated in the butter. Add a pinch of salt and pepper then pop the lid on top, turn the heat down to medium and let them cook away gently for 30 minutes, stirring every 5 to 10 minutes to make sure they don’t catch. There’s going to be enough moisture in the leeks to keep them happy in the pan so they should be soft and melt in your mouth once they’re done.

When your leeks are ready, add the turkey meat to them and stir. If you’ve got a bit of stuffing mixed in there you can put that in too. Add the flour, mix it in well then pour in your stock and stir again.

Add the crème fraîche then turn the heat up and bring everything back up to the boil. Have a taste and add a bit more salt and pepper if it needs it then turn the heat off. Pour the mixture through a sieve over another large empty pan and let the wonderful gravy from the mixture drip into the pan while you roll out your pastry (and by roll out I mean remove from the pack ^_^).

Get a deep baking dish roughly 22 x 30cm.

OPTIONAL - Dust a clean surface and a rolling pin with a bit of flour and roll your pastry out so it’s about double the size of your dish. Crumble the chestnuts over one half of the pastry then tear a few of the sage leaves over the chestnuts. Fold the other half of pastry on top then roll it out carefully and evenly so you have a rectangle big enough to cover your baking tray. Don’t worry if a few bits stick out here and there.

Spoon that thick leek mixture from your sieve into the pie dish and spread it out evenly.

I used packs of puff pastry sheets instead of rolling out a fresh batch.

Lay your pastry on top, tuck the ends under then gently score the pastry diagonally with your knife.

Add a pinch of salt to your beaten egg then paint this egg wash over the top of your pastry. Pop your pie in the oven for about 35 to 40 minutes or until the pastry is puffed up and golden brown.

When the pie is ready, re-heat the awesome gravy (I added a little cornflour to thicken it slightly) and drizzle over your pie.

You can serve with some steamed veggies, but this was meal enough for me! Yay for leftovers!!
